Tuesday morning (6:30 am for me) puppy photo dump! Dumping on Oppo like she does on my living room floor.

I was looking at her papers and the breeder had not put down the birthday of the dog. I called and was told (after they double checked) that it was January 17, which is also my birthday! So that’s kinda neat.

We’re trying to normalize car trips, she is a little apprehensive, but we try and reward her with taking trips to cool places. She has not had her shots, so getting out for walks is a no-no but I like to back the car up to the river, open the hatch and sit beside her as we both look over the scenery.

Adorable! It looks like her ears were dipped in tar or mud. So cute!

Yeah, her black highlights on her head and white back feet are super cute

I have not been good at taking pictures of Ravna. Doesn’t help that she’s either in constant motion when I’m near her, or asleep:

She’s recovering more & more from being spayed, so she’s getting more rambunctious and requiring more stimulation to keep from getting bored. Tough right now because I’m supposed to limit her exercise while the stitches are healing (through middle of next week at the earliest), but thankfully she is taking pretty well to training, so a 30 minute walk plus 15-20 minutes of training is  enough to earn a couple hours of her playing with her toys and/or napping.

I’m not looking forward to the spaying process. We have our first vet visit in a week and even that will suck!

She’s so cute!  It would be hard not to take her out on walks all the time

Yeah... I kind of am walking her a lot regardless , but trying to keep most of them to 15 minutes or less.

I’ve got my first vet appointment tonight. I’m not too worried about it, but it’s not gonna help her like the car any more. S he already pretty much shuts down on car rides and doesn’t take her usual training treats; gonna try hot dogs tonight. But  I don’t think I’ll be able to make car rides very rewarding until I can take her to dog parks around the end of next week.

Yeah, ours is not super happy with the car.  Trying to take her out every night for windows down, slow drives through the country.  Lots of smells/sights.

Whether or not that’s going to help depends on if she’s A) unhappy but not too scared in the car, B) so scared that each car ride is so unpleasant that it reinforces her bad associations with cars.

The best way to distinguish between these two is to hav e you or your wife drive and the other take along some of her favorite treats along (e.g. cheese or hot dogs) and give them to her during the ride. If she takes them, then she’s not having too bad a time, so keeping the rides short and rewarding her at the end will probably get her to like them.

If she doesn’t take her favorite treats, then she’s terrified (I fear this is the case with Ravna ). This means that, if possible, you should try to get her used to cars much more slowly. As in, put her get in, give her those high-value treats and praise her, then take her out. Repeat this a few times (her going in the car herself is usually the sign I use to move on to the next stage, but she’s probably to small to do that no matter what). Then you can move to turning the car on while she’s in it then shutting it off until that doesn’t faze her. Then you can start going short distances (like around the block). If she ever stops taking the treats then you need to go back to the previous stage.

This is the ideal method, but you’ll have to put her in the car for some things, like the vet. But if you can keep those few & far between enough that most of the time she’s getting in the car is for a conditioning session, then you should still be able to make progress.

I’m gonna bring hot dogs along on Ravna’s trip to the vet tonight to see if she’s in case A or B.
